Kansas City Star journalists gain voluntary recognition, join Guild

The Kansas City News Guild is official. That unit within the United Media Guild can prepare to bargain a first contract.

McClatchy, the parent company of the Kansas City Star, has granted voluntary recognition to the Guild.

An overwhelming majority of journalists at the newspaper signed authorization cards.  Our activists there were prepared to file for an election with the National Labor Relations Board.

But as it did at other NewsGuild-represented newpapers in its chain, McClatchy opted to recognize the union and not demand an election.

So our new members Kansas City can elect their officers and get ready to negotiate with the company. We welcome them to the movement.
